Marindi Falls

Surrounding views

I am of the opinion that, one place in Zimbabwe where nature’s beauty is best displayed, is the Eastern highlands of the country. Vumba forms part of this pristine mountainous region with plant and animal species referred to as “endemic” – meaning that, they are confined only to the Eastern Highlands of Zimbabwe & not found naturally occurring anywhere else in the world…

Let that sink in for a minute!

The adventure of the Eastern highlands starts the moment you pass Rusape and all of a sudden begin to see yourself, almost surrounded by mountains. If you visit during the wet season, the greenery will just blow your mind away. Having grown up surrounded by such beauty, waking up to it every single day was such an extra ordinary experience. The feeling even intensified when I got enrolled into a University outside of the region, driving down Christmas Pass at the end of each semester started having a whole new meaning to me. Choosing to settle in the Eastern highlands is definitely one of the many awesome decisions my parents made. What a privilege it was growing up there!

Directions to Marindi Falls & type of vehicle to use

Apart from the mountainous views, the Eastern Highlands is embellished with several magnificent waterfalls. Marindi Falls is one of them and is spectacularly phenomenal. It is located just 20km from Mutare CBD. While on Vumba road, you drive until you get to the Essex road turn off (leaving the turn off that goes to the Botanical gardens). You drive on that Essex road for about 8km until you see a clear sign post on your right written “Marindi Falls“. I strongly recommend a 4 wheel drive with good ground clearance. Parts of the road are pretty bad and can heavily damage a vehicle which is not suitable.

Entry fees at Marindi Falls

The surroundings of the falls are well maintained, making them a perfect picnic spot on a chilled sunny pleasant day. The fees are only $5 per adult, $3 per child and no extra charge for the vehicle. From the entry point to the actual falls, it is approximately 100m. A very cheerful Sekuru by the gate will even walk you there if you wish or if it is your first time. He will immediately leave to give you some privacy though, soon after escorting you.

Why you should make it a point to visit waterfalls

  • If you follow me on Instagram or Facebook, you must already be familiar with this one because I always talk about it: …
    • So you know those times when you feel depressed, or feel a certain level of anxiety and/or when you have trouble sleeping? That is due to a hormone called serotonin. This hormone has so much influence over your entire body, your mood, your eating habits, digestion, etc.
  • Now, this hormone is controlled by what are called cations (positive ions) and anions (negative ions). Cations lower serotonin levels, thereby causing an increase in anxiety, depression, feeling stuck and helpless. Low serotonin levels even affect your ability to come up with viable ideas to progress in your life.
  • What is of interest to you is that, these cations are found around us, particularly from electronic gadgets that we use such as phones, laptops, TV etc. For the serotonin to increase to healthy levels you need the anions. These anions are found especially around Waterfalls & mountains. This is why if you spend enough time at waterfalls you always feel rejuvenated. If you have never experienced this, visit Marindi Falls as soon as you get the chance. You will be amazed!

Remember to always have a little intimacy in your life, and as always I’m talking about intimacy with nature.
